Former MMA Series heavyweight champion Sergey Dyakonov assessed Alexander Volkov's performance at UFC 333 in an exclusive interview with MMA-TV.COM and shared his thoughts on the Russian heavyweight's chances of securing a title shot.
"Everything went as expected. The fight played out exactly how I thought it would. There was nothing extraordinary about his victory. It was just Volkov doing what he always does. So I wasn't particularly impressed by his win over Kuniev," Dyakonov said.
However, Dyakonov is not convinced that another victory will be enough to earn Volkov his long-awaited shot at the UFC heavyweight title. He believes the promotion could instead favor fellow Russian contender Sergei Pavlovich, who is set to face Alex Pereira.
"I think Volkov is going to get passed over again. Ciryl Gane is the champion right now. Pavlovich is going to fight Pereira, and he'll probably win. I think Pavlovich will get the next title shot. Alternatively, the UFC could book a rematch between Volkov and Pavlovich. But I'm certain Alexander won't be fighting for the belt in his next bout," Dyakonov said.
Volkov defeated Rizvan Kuniev by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on October 24. Following the fight, the Russian heavyweight once again questioned UFC officials about what more he needs to do to earn a title shot.
Volkov and Pavlovich have already faced each other inside the Octagon. In June 2024, Volkov defeated his fellow Russian by unanimous decision.
